Best source for correct length '69 tach cable

    Guys,

I recently restored my 69 and when I was assembling it I noticed that there was a "sweet" spot of how much cable should go into the distributor to get it to work. Too much or too little in the tach and it wouldn't work. I thought I had it adjusted but it just stopped working and after fussing with pulling the cable in and out of the dizzy to fix it for the last hour I think I'd just rather get the correct length cable and stop messing with this. Interestingly, the speedo cable was also short but I couldn't get it to work so I just replaced it and it's since been fine. Who sells the best, correct length tach cable?

          Mike,

Tread carefully. OE dia inner cables are typically larger than the reproduction ones available. I made the mistake of replacing my inner cable of a repro tach cable assy with an OE AC cable and it didn't last too long before getting chewed up. (and I used plenty of lube during replacement). I determined that the Repro jacket inner dia was also smaller, thus the issue of the larger dia inner cable with smaller jacket dia to reside in.

I went back to my OE outer jacket (cleaned up, of course) and the OE AC inner, and everything has been fine for the last 3,000 miles.

Thanks Bill. I guess to be sure if I get a whole OE style cable assembly I may have to replace the whole cable assembly, inner and outer. How tough is that to do?

For the Tach, very simple and straightforward. The Speedo cable assy is a much more daunting task. You will need to remove the multiple hole donut that the cable passes thru the firewall with, then separate the cable assy from the donut. you will pull the cable thru the firewall from the engine side.

Installation is opposite of the above.

Thanks Bill. My big fear was that there was something wrong with the tach and I would have to pull that out but I'm guessing that that's pretty uncommon. After the info you provided I'm sure it's the cable that has failed.
