    L98 spark plug wire retaining clip

    Good morning! First time posting a message here. I am preparing a 91 coupe for flight judging in August and working through the last bits needed. Need four 2-wire spark plug wire retaining clips. Can buy them brand new from Zip, but those are black. Originals of course were gray. Have four intact, correct clips in place. Need four more to replace the ones that are missing or broken.

    Any ideas? Thank you!

      Thank you Mark. I talked to the nice folks at Mirrock yesterday. They didn't have the clips, but they did have a wheel locking kit (bag, lug nuts, and key) that I needed, so it was a worthwhile conversation. Bought some clips from Redneck Corvette today which included a gray 2-wire clip. Down to just 3 needed

          There were 3 different spark plug wire retainers used on each car. Which ones are you in need of? Photos would be of great help.

            Good morning. See below for photo of a 2-wire clip on the car that slides onto the block-mounted retainers. Missing 2 of these. Have ordered some "floating" 4-wire clips from Zip. They are gray also. I need 2 more 2-wire clips like what is pictured below...along with - I think - some "floating" 2-wire clips. It's the "floating" clips that I cannot find in gray. Am I out to lunch on this?

              There are 12 Originality points and 12 Condition points related to Holders and Wire Coverings on your 1991 Flight Judging. Noting an Originality issue, judges will (should) spread those 12 points between holders and covers. These components are judged by Matrix Judging: Condition, Date, Completeness, Installation, and Finish. Each CDCIF element counts 20%. If grey/black is the ONLY difference among clips, then that would be a FINISH issue and subject to 20% deduction. Given most of your clips per your description have no issues, that 20% would be applied only those clips in question.

              As you can tell, we are progressively talking fewer and fewer points with holder/cover split, only SOME holders being at issue, and 20% Finish issue applied to those. Flight Judging has 4500 points total. Keep potential deductions in that 4500 points perspective.

              Operations can BYITA points wise. Make sure Ops is in good shape for your judging.

                With respect to the "floating" 2 wire retainers, by "floating" do you mean retainers that are not attached to a metal support (as pictured) or do you mean retainers that "cap" the retainer pictured?

                  Re: L98 spark plug wire retaining clip

                  Yeah I was out to lunch (happens a lot) on the "floating" 2-wire comment I made. Actually there are 8 (four per side) block-mounted retainers with plastic clips that slide on. I have 5 gray clips now. Missing 3. I hear you about simply getting 8 black clips and painting them gray. They're cheap, so that's a likely outcome to this particular issue. Appreciate very much getting those pics so I have an idea what it's suppose to look like.

                    I was incorrect before. No floating 2-wire clips. There are a total of 8 block-mounted retainers in place. Have 5 gray 2-wire plastic clips in place. Missing 3.

                      David------

                      Forgive me I'm still not understanding this. Let's get consistent on terms:

                      retainers= the plastic parts with grooves for 1, 2, or 4 plug wires and which attach to a support;

                      supports= the metal brackets to which retainers attach;

                      clips= plastic part with grooves for plug wires which does not attach to a support.

                      Most, if not all, retainers used on 1991 C4 L98 have an upper and lower component which, together, surround the plug wire.

                      Most, if not all, clips used on a 1991 C4 L98 are one-piece but hinged to completely surround the plug wire.

                      Your description of there being 8 block-mounted 2 wire retainers "does not compute" to me. That many 2 wire retainers would accommodate 16 plug wires but there are only 8 on an L98.

                        Re: L98 spark plug wire retaining clip

                        Hi Joe. That's a fair point. I'm talking about retainers. On this car there are four supports on each side. It's the 2-wire retainers for which I need 3 to replace missing/broken pieces. As you can see, it would appear the supports/retainers hold same wires. So they're not doubled up (16 wires)...just the same 4 wires on each side held by multiple retainers. I suppose the "upper" retainer on both sides of the back of the motor could/should be a 4-wire retainer. Those are actually available in gray. Then I'm down to just 1 gray 2-wire retainer needed to complete my collection Thanks for holding my hand on this - David
