    Re: Frozen Clutch

I've seen videos of people dropping frozen turkeys into boiling oil. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

      Re: Frozen Clutch

This may be a stupid question; however, since you never drove the car since installation of the clutch 5 years ago, have you checked the adjustment to make sure that the clutch is trying to release with the pedal depressed?

Another suggestion is setting the clutch (temporarily) for no "free play" in the pedal. This would cause MAXIMUM travel of the release bearing with the pedal depressed and potential for maximum clearance between the clutch disc and the pressure plate.......or flywheel..........

If you do get the clutch to release, how are going to determine if there is damage to the flywheel or pressure plate without removal for a look.....

PAT: i'm familiar with the road in front of yer shop(perhaps ought not mention i've been by there before---myusta been a beer store nearby). anyway, if you paint the rims yellow on your green 67 and put a triangular caution sign on its rear bumper, the locals will think its a john deer tractor and let you do your thing to release the clutch disc.. good luck, mike

              Patrick,
Another possibility is the clutch disc is rusted on the transmission input shaft splines and refuses to retract away from the flywheel....
A possible test would be to remove 2 top transmission bolts and replace them with longer bolts with the heads cut off. (Put a slot in them so you can turn with a screw driver). Remove the 2 bottom bolts from the transmission and mount, remove the speedo cable and disconnect the drive shaft. Now see if the transmission can be slid back some on the headless transmission bolts. If you can get some movement toward the rear of the car (say 1/4" then you will know the clutch disc is not frozen on the transmission input shaft........

                  Re: Frozen Clutch

SUCCESS! The clutch freeing method that was greeted with ridicule worked like a charm. I jacked up the rear wheels with a floor jack on the rear spring plate, put it in 4th gear, started the engine, ran it up to 3500 rpm with the clutch pedal pushed down, and my friend opened the jack quickly. It burned a little rubber, jumped about 2 car lengths, and the clutch was free. I took it on its first drive in 25 years, and it seems fine. Hopefully, the pictures of its 4th gear burnout marks and the newly driven car are attached.

                      Congratulations Pat,

Your '67 looks fantastic! Maybe Danny and I can swing by the shop in the near future to get a closeup view?

                      Take care,
                      Mike

Beautiful car! Just curious..........does the clutch chatter after any of the aforementioned remedies?

Hi Pat. It doesn't look like Danny or I will be venturing far from our families for a while. It's always a treat going to your shop to step into your private Corvette big block museum! And it's always an education seeing what two retired engineers are working on. Your L-71 and John's 396 are state-of-the-art.

I really enjoyed the shot you posted here of your '67 parked on "dangerous drive". Really tricky turning onto the main drag with all those crazies there! I'm forwarding the photo to D-Boy. Take care, Mike
