I have searched the archives with no luck. Can an AM-FM Stereo radio in a '72 have station presets on both bands at the same time or just one band? I set station presets on FM than set station presets on AM only to find that the FM presets are no longer right. It happens no matter which band I do first. Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: 72 radio station presets
JR and Steve------
Yes, I think that Steve is too used to modern electronic radios for about the last 25 years. For most of these, the presets are specific to the band. So, a radio with, say, 3 bands (AM, FM1, FM2) and 6 preset buttons actually will have the ability to have 18 presets, 6 per band.
Once upon a time, of course, auto radios didn't have presets, at all. It was all manual tuning. And, at the time, folks were just thrilled to have a radio in their car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 72 radio station presets
One more radio question while we're on the subject. My car has stereo speakers and there is a little lever that hangs below the tuning knob. When I turn the lever to the right which rotates the stereo wheel counterclockwise, the left speaker operates alone. Then if the lever is turned to the left which rotates the stereo wheel clockwise, the right speaker operates alone. Does this seem like correct operation? The radio and speaker system was removed and sent out for service and I feel like I got all wiring back where it was before. Thanks again- Top

Yes, that sounds right to me.
By the way, if by "stereo speakers" you mean speakers on both sides of the dash, that's what it should have. However, that does not mean that you have an actual stereo system. The U-69 radio system was not stereo; it was a "monaural" system with dual speakers. The U-79 system was stereo and used exactly the same speakers as the U-69. Without getting into the dash, the only way to know if you have a U-69 or U-79 system is the presence or not of a stereo indicator light on the radio head unit.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
