    65 Telescopic column

I need to obtain about one more inch of length between the steering wheel and my stomach. I now have a standard column in my coupe and am considering changing to a telescopic column. Does the tele column push further in toward the cluster then the standard column?

that's a good question. I have both so I will check when I get home. I to have problems with my standard column getting longer over the years.

I cannot measure until Monday - My GUESS is that the tele column will allow a little more room.

Werner Meier of Masterworks in MI: No gain from a tele. You CAN adjust a standard column so there is more of it in the rag joint.

Option 2. Use a flatter smaller steering wheel such as from a 1969 Corvette. (You will have to bend the turn signal lever.)

Option 3. You know that one.

            Re: 65 Telescopic column

            I measured both columns.
My 65 tele fully retracted had 7 5/8" to the base of the dashboard
My 67 standard column had 8 1/2" to the base of the dashboard.
So actual measurements show 7/8 " difference.
The tele fully retracted is closer to your lap so you may have to extend when leaving seat

              Bill,

Does your 65 tele column have the correct tele rag joint or are you using a non tele rag joint?

              Thanks,
              Dave K.

It is a restored car but I would have to double check that to be sure.

The correct rag joint gives the Tele column more compression length.

I will check and see. I never had a reason to find out there was a difference. Is there anyone in your area of Pa who has a car with that option so you could try it out?

yes it is a telescopic joint flat coupling on the box and bolted to the column half. I wish I could post picture but never have any luck
