1978 Differential Codes

The stamping on the differential doesn't get judged, but I have access to it now and am curious as to the coding. The ratio codes are in the JG- mine is "OH" for 3.55-but I don't see any other code info.

The other characters are: 007 W8 E1. How would this decode?

For some reason, differential unit stamped coding often varies in strange ways. I don't think that yours is typical. In any event, here's what I THINK it decodes to:

007 is PROBABLY the julian day of the year. If so, this would make it the 7th of January

W= Warren, MI gear and axle plant. All 1963-79 Corvette differential carrier units were manufactured at Warren

8 PROBABLY represents the last digit of the year (i.e. 1978)

E= Eaton posi unit. All 1966-79 Corvette differential carrier units were originally equipped with an Eaton posi unit.

1= shift at Warren at which the unit was manufactured.

There are often quite a few "permutations" of the stamping usually containing the same information but "arranged" in different ways. I have no idea why it was this way
