    Driveshaft Tunnel Guard

I bought a new driveshaft tunnel guard for my 57. Mine was missing.

The repro looks to be a good copy, except it is finished in what looks like red primer. I can't believe that is correct. If not, does anyone know what the correct finish is suppose to be?

The AIM shows it fastened in with two rivets near the front on the top. Looks like 3/16 rivets. The spacing between the rivets differs from my car. My car has two rivet holes spaced 2-1/2" apart. The new guard measures 3" between centers. So I have a minor problem here. Anyone know for sure which dimension is correct?

It also has a 1/2" hole near the rear. Any idea what that hole is for?

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

        Dan,
My pm box says I have room for 27 more. Do not know what is going on. If you email through this venue, it should work.

          ok
Is the tunnel guard information secret or am I missing something here?

No secrets here Mark. Mike sent me a PM offering to sell me an original guard, which I was interested in. I presume he wanted to keep a sale off of the forum, which is okay. I tried to PM him back and got the "full PM box" message. Mike says he has plenty of space, so I don't know whats going on.

At any rate, I crawled under my car today (I'm getting too old for this) and discovered that my guard is in place and looks okay, although a little crusty, which I would expect. Don't know why I thought it was missing - got to be old age.

So Mike, thank you for the offer, I appreciate it, but I will just use my 'original' and send the repro back.

I appreciate the help here guys.

Ahh..ok. I was curious because I think mine might be missing, so I was interested in what was going on with yours. I aim pulling the engine and trans out this weekend so I'll get a better look under there. Where is it exactly?

It is just back of the shifter, above the front u-joint. It is held to the tunnel fiberglass by 2 - 3/16" rivets. If yours is missing, talk to Mike. If you want a new one, CC sells them - $42. I have answered my original questions about the configuration and quality, and it looks to be a good repro.

                      Hi Mark,

Thought I would add to this thread. I trust that you have solved your missing tunnel guard problem by now. As a related question, just forward of the tunnel guard is a plate of some kind the holds the 2 #10-32 screws that hold the shifter plate in place. Mine is not missing, but is something that someone hand made, and it is not very pretty. Thought maybe you could describe what it looks like for me, or better yet if you could post a photo of yours, assuming of course that yours is not missing and is probably original.

I don't see this part in the AIM, or as being available from any of our suppliers. This maybe because the plate is riveted to the underside of the transmission cover and was supplied to GM as an assembly.

Anybody that can help would be appreciated.

                      Thanks,

                      -Dan-

                        Re: Driveshaft Tunnel Guard

I still don't have a tunnel guard in place.
The shifter plate screws go into two spring loaded captured nuts that pop into holes drilled through the tunnel at the top. i just had to replace mine, as someone put some loose clip nuts in as a substitute but those fell out when I took the plate off. I got a new pair from corvette central. I can take a pic tomorrow for you as I haven't re-installed my shift plate yet so the are visible.
