I bought a correctly dated tipped fan for my '72 and the pictured fan clutch was on it. It has a 5/8" pilot hole which indicates to me that it's a '70 or earlier clutch. There are no markings on it other than "EATON" stamped in the face. Is this a corvette part or just an over the counter replacement piece? Thanks!!

Re: Fan Clutch ID help
Tom,
I have done a lot of research on fan clutches. These 7 1/4" dia. Eaton fan clutches were quite common on GM vehicles in the 1970's. Your fan clutch has the 2nd design face with the large "ears". The 1st design 7 1/4" Eaton fan clutches made in the late 1960's have a face with small "ears". I collected many fan clutches from salvage yards in the 1980's and 1990's. They usually are ink stamped on the front face with "EATON", a 2-letter code, and a date code.
Example of an original fan clutch like yours from an early 1975 Chevrolet with 3991431 fan dated "C75" (March 1975): fan clutch stamped "EATON", "AK", and "E15FB" (E=May, 15 = 15th of month, F = 1975, and B is unknown).
I also have a 7 1/4" Eaton fan clutch with the small "ears" from a 1971 Monte Carlo ink stamped EATON", "AG", and "E4B" which is also stamped "EATON" in very small letters.
Enclosed is a photo of a 1969 Camaro 396 fan clutch stamped "EATON" and "CZ" (GM # 3946050) which I found on the web.

Re: Fan Clutch ID help
Hey Jim, good to see you're still here checking things out. I knew that the clutch was incorrect for my '72. Just didn't want to toss a part that may be useful to someone. Guess this one will end up in the recycle bin. On a personal note, I've been working on the car. Will send an update soon. Have fun!!- Top

Re: Fan Clutch ID help
Tom------
In addition to the 5/8" pilot, I assume the fan clutch hub bolt circle is 1-3/4" and the fan attachment bolt circle is 3". If so, this is the 1960-70 configuration. No 1960-70 Corvette ever originally used a fan clutch of the overall configuration you pictured.
However, except for the aforementioned dimensions, this fan clutch is virtually identical in configuration to the late 70's Corvette fan clutch GM #460742. The latter fan clutch was also SERVICE for many Corvettes from 1971+.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
