I did the normal Duntov prerequisites (97+ at. Regional and PV) and completed the two additional Bowtie displays. The 5th star and Duntov were awarded at the 2010 Charlotte National. In this case the Bowtie was first but the 5th star was hanging in the balance so de-Bowtie possibility was eliminated. The other point is the Bow tie award goes with the car (the only award like that) and it is possible for two or more owners to accomplish the four 5th star prerequisites.
So if you buy a 4 star Bowtie, does the 5th star get awarded for just displaying it, or is there more judging involved for the 5th?

Bow tie judging is a one shot deal. If you buy a Bow tie car like I did, you do the 4 prerequisites and bring it to a National Convention for the 5th star. In my case I fit a Duntov attempt in between.

That's interesting. So it is possible to buy a 4 star Bowtie car, do a Duntov, and get a 5th star by bringing it to a National without it being examined/judged again by the Bowtie judges?

The fifth star consists of a thorough review of the car by the Team Leader. He may also solicit the help of others if he thinks it is necessary but ultimately he decides if the fifth star is to be awarded. The fifth star is far from automatic. Under your scenario there are experienced judges doing the Duntov and they can tell if the car was massaged away from original as well. They process is very thorough.

Given the major hurdles and multitude of checks and judging, you have to wonder how many dual 5 star Bowtie-Duntov cars have ever made it. Anyone know or venture an educated guess?

As of about a year or two ago there were approximately 30 Bowtie/Duntov cars. Thanks to one member in particular I would estimate there are 3 + more and counting. That does not count the Maclellan (sp?) cars.

Thanks, yes I saw several of his cars at the Denver National last week, it is what got me wondering about all this.

If it's the gentleman I'm thinking of from IL, he sure finds some incredibly nice cars, and it's always a privilege to judge them.
