I have a friend that has a 62 and is wondering what tire make and size he can use that fits into the spare tire tub and will let the cover sit flush. he's not worried about having the car correct.

Only a non DOT tire will fit right.Steve Gansky

Re: Spare tire question for 62
Steve is correct. Today's reproduction bias-ply tires, or replacement modern radials are larger when aired-up.
What he could do is buy a tire matching the existing tires on the road wheels, and just leave enough air in the tire to keep it sealed to the rim. maybe 5-10 psi. THis will keep the sidewall lower to fit the well better. Carry a 12v portable tire inflator and store it under the cover or tucked in the trunk somewhere. If by chance he ever gets a flat, a few minutes to get the spare re-inflated and he's good to go.

Re: Spare tire question for 62
Get a new radial or bias tire for an old VW, I believe it is 185x80x15, I'll check when I get home Monday, fits in the tub and you don't have to worry about a 50 year old tire. A local tire shop got me one for under $100- Top

Re: Spare tire question for 62
Another alternative would be a 165/80/15 radial tire available new from McCormack Racing for $70.00 shipped.
Measures: 5.50" section X 25.50" diameter.
I know it will fit C2 tubs with stock 5.5" and 6" rims and allows the carrier to FULLY close; however, not sure about C1's?- Top

With this spare, the trunk plywood sits completely flat.

Re: Spare tire question for 62
As Terry mentioned a VW 185 x 15 tire does fit however, the hight is different. I had one in my 59 and when I compared the 6.70 x 15 next to it the diameter was approx 2 inches smaller. Put a 6.70 15 in deflated and carry a small inflator- Top

Re: Spare tire question for 62
Height doesn't matter unless you plan on driving hundreds of miles. I don't know about you guys but when I travel with my wife I need ALL the trunk space I can get, no room for an inflator that with my luck will break right after I start to inflate the spare!- Top
