        Re: the only difference is

Us guys in the south end of Indiana know who "Warshawsky" is. I still have some of the old catalogues. Didn't them and JC used to be across the street from one another?

Lots of folks think the Corvette hobby is dying and that as soon as the current crop of enthuiasts is gone, so will be the vintage Corvette. Keep in mind that there are differences in vintage Corvettes vs some of the other cars. #1. The Vette, regardless of MY has been a high performance sports car since the mid 50's. Yes, there were some dry years in the 70's/early 80's, but the Vette was more a sports car than anything else you could buy at the time. #2. The Vette has been in production for 50 years; Model A's are no longer produced. Yes, two seat T-Birds are back, but they aren't quite the same. The kids of today seem to be into rice burners and pickup trucks. Newer Vetts are so expensive that few younger people can afford them, and the affordable early C4's are too complex for most DIY'ers. Tough to be a hot rodder today without a degree in EE. I doubt many of us will be around when the Corvette hobby disappears.

Nope. Same outfit, different names. State St. and Archer Ave, near 18th St. Polish for the Chicagoans; Anglicized for the rest of the country.

When you guy's were 20 years old, '57 Chevys were pretty easy to come by, for a couple hundred or so. Today, all the American made cars which could be hot rod material are way beyond the means of todays kids. Ricers are the only alternative. If '57 Chevys (or others) were still cheap and plentiful, all the kids would be driving them, not Hondas.

Yeah. We look like old farts even to ourselves. But that's OK - beats the alternative, and I'm enjoying myself with my old Corvette.

But I never want to act like an old fart. I didn't like it 40 years ago when I was subjected to it, and I swore I'd never be like that.

Re: a tale of Warshawsky and Whitney

Growing up as a kid in Chi-town, I remember Washawsky and Whitney being right next to each other. I used to look at the catalogs when I was about 8 years old (car nut even then I guess). Yes, very close to Archer and State, but on State. Later, we moved to the suburbs and I caddied through my teen age years. Caddied at an all Jewish country club in the south suburbs. Once carried a bag for a guy named Washawsky. I'll never forget asking him if he owned the auto parts store and he said "Yep". Then I asked if he owned Whitney (other than the cover I believe the catalogs were identical and they were next to each other). Once again, he said "Yep. We were about 150 yards out on a par 5 when I asked him why two stores, same catalog, right next to each other? He said "It's a legal thing kid. You wouldn't understand. Now hand me that three wood son." I said "yep".

A man of few words but many strokes.

BTW, ski is Polish, sky is Jewish. Large populations of each group in Chi town.

I once had the opportunity of visiting his collection of antique cars in the mid-70s. No Corvettes, but some amazingly original (at least I thought some of them were) major automobiles. Dusenbergs, Packards, Rollers - real stately examples. The story of how I got to see them is too long and boring - we would all fall asleep.

I used to buy my GM race parts from Honest Charlie and Northshore Speed. For Ford flat head parts JC Whitney etal.

Thank God for the ricers. There was a time not long ago when there wasn't a good performing car made and NONE of the kids were interested in fixing up their cars. If it weren't for the ricers the hot rod spirit would be dying out fast. Besides, those tiny engines might grow up someday. These kids still drop their jaws at the sound of a 427/435 going through the gears.
