    Mid year Intake Manifold Gaskets

How are the gaskets on intake manifold of a 66 327/350 judged. Do the judges look for any tabs on the gaskets ?? I am referreing to the gaskets that seal the front and back of the block areas not the intake to the head area. I am having a heck of a time getting the gaskets to seat properly. I set them and then the next day they seem to have moved and are coming out. I didnt want to just use sealer without asking if the gasket & tabs are judged.

    Thanks in advance

Ye, they should look for the tabs and the "GM" stamp on the rear tab

      John------

You should be able to ensure the retention of the end seals by applying a few small dabs of 3M Super Weatherstrip Cement to the bottom of the seal and the block surface. No one will be able to see this if you do it carefully.

However, I suspect that your problem is more than this. Very often, if the heads and/or block surfaces have been machined (surfaced), the "angularity" change will cause the intake manifold to seat a little "lower". This causes a "squeeze-out" of the end seals no mater what you do. If so, you will need to have the end rails of the manifold machined to compensate. Of course, one could always use silicone sealer instead of the seals and forgo the machining AND get a better seal. But, if you are after strict originality, this won't be an option for you.

        Joe,

This is the reason many people use the silcone sealer and use John Hinckley's motto, "I'll take the hit."

Sometimes a point or two isn't worth the hassle involved in obtaining it.

          Guy's
Here is something I've done with sucess, but knowing that no machine work had been done. Take a large center punch stake the block surface from one side to the other 1 in. apart. This raises the metal enough to give a grip to the gasket and/or silicone and keeps it from walking out. Can' be seen by anyone.

If you really know your car, you can "spend" up to 270 points and still make Top Flight; this is one of the areas where I "spent" a point or two - I drive my car, and I just can't stand oil leaks. It's hard for me to watch an oil leak (which requires removing the intake to fix) and rationalize how I saved a point over it three years ago. Reality

Hi John! Both front and rear gaskets will have GM raised on the rubber tabs . Best wishes! Bruce
