Re: Ah, Give It Up, Clem...

Yes, I think Canada may be one of our biggest suppliers, but I'm not sure if they are the biggest.

Remember about 30 years ago when Carter (aka "Jimma" the former president) told us we had to get off middle east oil? It's no more likely now then back then, maybe less.

When the price of oil gets to $150-200 a barrel extracting oil from shale may be viable as long as no one objects to strip mining the western slope of the Rockies.

Extracting oil from oil sands is already viable, and refiners are making huge investments to increase their capacity to do so.

Yes, I think "tar sand" extraction is being done in Canada.

Back in the late seventies/early eighties there was a government funded "oil shale" project in Utah or Colorado that sought to extract oil from "shale", but it was shut down because the price of oil never reached a level (about $50/barrel) in that era that made the project economically viable.

Are these two technologies the same or different?

              Be nice to your neighbours

              to the north:

"Canada remained the largest exporter of total petroleum in November, exporting 2.431 million barrels per day to the United States, which is an increase from last month (2.411 thousand barrels per day). The second largest exporter of total petroleum was Saudi Arabia with 1.620 million barrels per day."

                  Duke,

They are different technologies, with similar price points for economic viability. Oil sands seem to be primary contender in the alternate crude space, perhaps due to our NIMBY response to strip mining in the US. The reserve of oil sand in Alberta is about the same as all conventional crudes world wide, so I would expect this to becoming an increasingly important part of domestic refiners crude slate.

So long as you guys don't elect a Hugo Chavez alter-ego, we'll be OK.

Hugo cut off Exxon-Mobil yesterday for using the world courts to try and recover compensation for their nationlized production facilities. Ah, shoot...There goes the Venzuluean contribution. We'll have to be careful not to PO Calderon about stemming the hordes of Mexican citizens streaming north to make a living...they may cut us off too.
