Re: brake spring on 64, both front & back ?

I know this discussion is on 63/64 but if you go to Rob's c1 registry and the MIRA analysis they have a picture of the rear drum with the spring. I believe it is the flat coil one. pg 14. And on pg. 41 it says that there were 4 springs.

      http://www.c1registry.com/downloads/...e_Analysis.pdf

Is there a MIRA test on mid years?

Re: brake springs on drum brake 65

Just for information my drum brake 65 coupe which appears to have had the original drums on it (cause they looked like they were way past once around the block) had drum springs on all 4 corners. I since replaced the drums (because I like the brakes to be there when necessary) but the replacement drums do not have as deep a pocket for the springs to sit in. Original springs were rectangle wire where as replacements are round.

            Re: brake spring on 63

Joe, My white 63 was at the show. I only have the springs on the front brake drums. My car has the metallic brake option. I thought the spring was only for the metallic brake cars and not all of them. Course it was a big issue when the car was being restored as the car had springs on all four drums. Trouble is that one of them got lost in my garage and I only had three originals. Then I found out I only needed two. John
The chassis judges were the father and son team weren't they. Good judges. John

Re: brake spring on ALL 63's ??

Joe, Franz Estericher repros the brake drum springs. I was waiting and reading hoping to findout if ALL 63's used the brake drum springs instead of just the ones with metallic brakes. My car was taken off the road in 1970. When I bought it the car had four (4) brake drum springs on it. We were down to the wire getting the car ready for Marlborough and when I posted the QT on this board the consensus was only springs on the front drums. I didn't agree but felt that if that was what the boys were looking for that was nice as it solved the problem. AS mentioned there are two versions of this spring. Round and flat. Bare steel also. What color is your 63? coupe or convertible. Never saw so many 63's lined up in a row. Most were fuel cars. One was a carb car I remember and a big time judge with blond hair and shorts said to me. Hey DeGregory, See that poor guy with the carb '63-well that SOB is a fake. Used to be an FI car and the guy put a carb on it. EVeryone standing in the rain outside getting the ops done laughed in spite of the fact that they were soaked. John

Re: brake spring on ALL 63's ??

I had the saddle tan with white convertible roof. We have met before at the regional in Indiana. My car was not that car you spoke about. But I had a tough time with the judges in Boston because they were so late in judging they really didn't give me any time to discuss their results. they wanted to leave. I was the last car judged by the 63-64 team and I didn't get out of there until almost 6p.m So alot of questions I had weren't answered and I felt that the team wasn't as knowledgeable as I had hoped. there were several mistakes they made that I was unable to correct because I also judge so I'm not the type to hang over a judges shoulder. I wait until they are done and it cost me. Overall I was dissapointed in the show and I dread going to the national there.
I have to say that I think the judge that made that comment is an SOB. THAT PERSON TO ME DEMONSTRATED WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE ELISTIST ATTITIUDE THAT ncrs sometimes demonstrates to people.

                  John,

I'm not sure if the brake drum spring issue will ever be solved. I remember new cars that had the spring and I also remember new cars that didn't have it. If I remember correctly, full size pass cars had the same hit or miss on the spring. Wish I understood why this occured but I don't.
