    1976 Gas Cap

Can anyone send me a pic of an original gas cap from a 76E. The book says it was gold. Is that paint or chemically treated? Thanks!

I have a few NOS examples of the cap around here [none for sale], but getting to them is too difficult right now. However, I can tell you this: the caps were zinc plated with a gold irridite overplate. This is similar to, for instance, the headlight actuators.

I'm sure that there are platers who would take this project on. The problem is that the fuel cap is composed of both metal and plastic components that are "inseperable". So, some real care is required in re-plating it. Actually, it may be that the zinc plating is fine and all that needs to be done is a re-application of the irridite overplate.

Does your cap have a part number stamped on the top surface? If so, what is it?

That's the correct stamping. I don' think that these caps were dated. If they were, I know nothing about it.
