    Michael: Speed Test Results...

My computer showed 46,666 when I took the test. Results showed 40.4 In addition, it showed: 1 MB file download = 3.5 minutes. Storage: 4.9 KB AND, would you believe, Subjective rating = Slow

Of course, my little tiny TV sets were going off and on during the test. I remain curious if that is factored into the test or not ???

        Same Thing Happened To Me...

Except I didn't have the $50K equipment you had.

At the time, we had our telephone service through ATT. Over thirteen years, we had service through several cheapest providers, and never had a problem. Then, we began losing the caller id signal, at first intermittently, then completely. We complained to ATT.

They first gave us the runaround about the batteries in the caller id units could be bad (Duhhh...Got a freaking MS in engineering here!! Two independent units are simultaneously bad?). Then they said it could be the telephone that was bad (brand new Panasonic), and then it was our house wiring. All this from ignorant, squeak-through-high-school clerks probably 1000 miles away.

After the second call, they agreed to have the telco's wiring checked. Oh, yeah...The "Computer" said the line was A-OK. Actually, they were talking to the owner's (SWB) technicians who looked at a computer screen and said the line was OK. We made four or five progressively heated calls to ATT...it got where we could hear these ignorant clerks laughing in the background at our frustration.

Alright, that was it...NO MAS ATT, HELLO SWB. We got the service switched over to SWB, and we had exactly the same problem...as I expected. Immediately called in a complaint and asked for a service man to come out and check their line. He came out and hooked up his leads, and at first the line checked out OK...then he got a little "blip" and it repeated often. He tried his caller id box...no workee. He went to the substation, and switched the pair...problem was instantly cured.

From now on, ATT or anything associated with ATT can go to blazes. May their stock become worthless. Moral: If you want the best telephone service, arrange it with the company that owns the equipment.

            Re: Michael: Speed Test Results...

            Dennis,

The numbers that you are getting actually sound a bit better than average for dial-up service. Typically a connection test will show somewhere between 25 and 35 Kbs instead of the 40 that you are getting. Most of the numbers that you see advertised are the possible speed but the ping test is actually testing the connection between you, your server and the test source location. I'd like to hear back from a few other dial-up users that have run this test to compare.

Is this problem new or has it always been slow loading?

Just as a comparison, your unit/service shows 1Mb download in 3.5 minutes. My cable service showed a peak of 1.0Mb download in 2.3 seconds.

If your connection speed is 40kbs, I would have to guess that there may be something in your computer slowing things down instead. Hopefully, Jack Humphrey will get involved in this again and have some suggestions.

            Michael

FWIW my DSL connection shows 1.1 megabits per second with a 1 MB file download in 7.5 seconds.

That's pretty hot Terry. Most DSL tests are a bit less. I switched from DSL to cable about a year ago and there's a slight difference but nothing major for just surfing. The big difference was in DL'ing (free) music or big files.

Thanks Michael. I knew that cable was faster, but DSL offers the option of dial-up numbers when I travel to regionals. Cable is a one location only service. Perhaps because I am in the large urban jungle there is an internet advantage. I am sure the spread of wireless service will alter the ISP landscape soon.

That's true, and a good point. When I had DSL, I liked it and probably wouldn't have changed to cable but the deal that they offered was too good to pass up. I don't travel nearly as much as I once did so the loss of portability wasn't an issue.

Sure hope Dennis gets his system working properly. That would be cruel and unusual punishment for me if my system was slow again.

There is an exception to the noise outside

If the house has DSL, there is a heck of a buzz at the telco jack.

When my line got cut, the contract installers came out, installed the new line in the ground, and then plugged in their headset. BUZZZZZ. So they called in a ticket on the lines.
