Could someone please explain the reason for the undercoating on my 67 coupe? Is it something I should refresh? I have completed restoring the car and intend to drive it. It is not a show car. How much undercoat was used, i.e.a little, a lot, some? Where all was it applied? Any help would, as always, be appreciated.

Re: C2 undercoat
undercoating especially important on the underside of the front top surroud. those small pieces of gravel your tires will throw up on the underside of the surround have the potential of fracturing the lacqquer paint on the topside of the surround. undercoating will also muffle road noise. good luck, mike- Top

Re: C2 undercoat
the underbody coating used back when was i believe an asphault based product , the way it can be pulled away from the inner fenders, versus say a 3M product that is a rubberized product and far superior. The gun you refer to is a SHULTZ gun , the newer products will sometimes require a specific tip or applicator to apply their products . Look around most body supply houses or shops of quality of work will direct you in the right way and product. As always get an education first or make the mistakes.- Top

Re: C2 undercoat
I recently undercoated the areas after my restoration clean-up of the fender areas.
The material in the spray cans does not replicate the original. It is too thin... a requirement to get it out of the spray can. This results in the undercoating being too smooth...
I used a product by 3M called BODY SCHUTZ part #08864. It is applied with a SCHUTZ gun #08897 at about 40 psi. Both are available from NAPA or other automotive suppliers.
This stuff goes on with a fairly thick consistency.... the lower the pressure... the rougher the texture. It is an asphalt based product.
Mask the areas that you want to protect and place paper on the floor. What I did was mask about 3 inches away from the areas that shouldn't have undercoating and then sprayed only the correct areas. This allowed for some spatter/overspray as original, but kept everything else clean in case I messed up.
Clean up with lacquer thinner. Good Luck.- Top
