    C1-1958 Cowl Vent

I undid the screw mounting the cowl vent to the hinge brackets and operating lever, with the intent of pulling the vent (with screen and welded brackets) out for paint (mine is black inside rather than "correct" body color).
I can't seem to get the thing to come up and out no matter how I try to turn it!
I've already made a chip or two in the paint around the opening.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could the pieces have been spot welded after insertion? It just doesn't seem possible to extract it.

    Al,

I also have a '58 245 hp that I have been working on for the past two years. To get to your question, although it was not easy, I managed to take the cowl vent out. Maybe you've given up too soon. As I said it was two years ago, but if I remember correctly, the hinges and arm connected to the vent were still attached when I removed it. I'm just worried about getting it back in after an expensive paint job. I will probably protect the area to prevent chipping or scratching.
Maybe someone who has done this operation more recently can add to this. Also give some tips on putting the vent back into position - how do you protect the paint?

Finally got it out - not without a couple of dings on the edge of the opening.
In part, the actuating lever was hanging on the wiper xmsn cables - I was leery of stressing those!

        Al,

I guess my memory is still in tact. That was probably what was hanging up my removal. Glad you were successful. Now getting the piece back in. Maybe I'll put it in before I install the wiper mechanisms. I had them all restored - transmissions, cables, motor, etc. I hope someone will jump in on the best method to put it all back together. Good luck on your work.

There is an article I wrote which was printed in the Restorer in the mid `90s which explained the procedure I used. If you can not locate it E me and I will send you an MS Word version with out photos.

            Gary,

I have the CD, but can't find the article. Could you give me the issue number or title so I can find it. Thanks!
