George, I don't know about the wrench but I just bought the upper outer weatherstriping for my 90 and 84. I got them from my local chevy house and I think they were about $40.00 each. I have not put them in yet but they take two pop rivets one at each end. They align in the center by a small guide hole in the door and a protuding stem on the strip. The replacement pieces I got have several clips on the new strip which fit perfectly in the door mounting holes. Based on having already taken my doors apart for painting the car (84) and replacing a window motor (90) looks like you would have to remove the window glass (or at least drop it down) so that you can get the pop rivets in. To me, it will be very easy to fit the new pieces in but you have to remove a lot of stuff just to get the job done. It will be worth it for fresh new stuff on the doors.

George I have put the door/window weatherstripping on my 85 twice. No window removal necessary, only the door panel. The end rivets are drilled out and the weatherstripping just snaps/fits into the other holes and install new rivets at each end.

Jim thanks for correcting me on window removal. My doors are all apart for other work and looked like window glass would get in the way of rivets and/or the clips. Bet George will be glad you posted your response.

Giving some more thought to the procedure, its been at least 7 years since I have replaced the 85's weatherstripping when it was painted, I believe there are some lateral glass adjustment things that can be loosened to move the top of the window towards the inside of the car to give some working room.

George, wanted to apologize for all the "half baked" assistance that I am probably not providing to you. I looked at my doors again, which are all apart, and I checked the outer rubber seals. GM Part numbers are 10245646 and 10245645. The outer seal does not have the center locating stub that I previously mentioned. This item happens to be how the inner door panel felt locates so that you can staple it on. Bottomline on the outer seal is that the seven clips and two pop rivet holes make it easy to set in place--it just fits. You should know that I was having some outer glass scracthing too and these new seals have felt runners attached so that should help should you be having the same problem. While I was fixing this problem I noticed that my inner anti-rattle felt pads were severely worn so I replaced them also. Well, in the end, I found that more and more had to be taken apart to make all this happen. It simply isn't that much work if you take your time and remove things correctly and think ahead. Same is true when putting back together--just have your patience and do your best to make it right the first time.

Is this like German cars w/ large flush fitting hex indents? If so go to the BMW boards for many ideas and solutions. It may be 14mm like theirs? Many sources for larger 14mm allen wrenches individually I suppose incl Sears. FACOM is a popularly supplier of tools for vehicles and such originating from Europe. A 3/8-16 connecting bolt may also fit in 14mm recesses nicely and be simple to wrench on and cost pennies... Not sure if we are talking the same thing but if so there's some ideas.

I cannot stress this enough!!! -> always be sure you loosen or open up the fill plug BEFORE the drain plug in many a modern gear box!
